Seated in lawn chairs atop a roof, with a cooler of beer partially depleted, Matt asked Ryan, “How are you feeling?” Ryan fell silent, searching within himself. Despite the feeling of a still tender broken heart, he felt the strangest sense of hope. In spite of constant failed attempts at love, he still searched for it amidst a sea of heartache.
“Somehow hopeful,” Ryan responded with a resilient, small grin. He looked towards the horizon, watching Earth’s star disappear. “Much like the setting sun, I know love will return at some point. But I also know it will disappear. I know that there must be someone who will cherish me no matter where the sun is. There are eight billion people on this planet. I must be someone’s love.”
Matt saw a shining glint of hope behind eyes dulled by pain. Ryan still had hope; he still searched for his love. He didn’t know when he would meet his one. Perhaps he already had, and just didn’t realize it. But Matt knew Ryan still held pain in his heart. And that Ryan might get beaten down here and there. But Ryan always took the standing eight count and got back on his feet again to fight in his search for true love. Ryan hoped that the one for him would take away the pain he felt in his lonely heart.
“Love is a beautiful but painful thing,” Matt mused. “But like you said, there’s gotta be someone out there for you. And when you find her, you’ll be loved for the rest of your time.” Matt extended his beer out. Ryan smiled and clinked his beer against Matt’s. Ryan sipped, feeling a sense of rejuvenation within himself. Matt’s assurance brought him to smile.
